Knowledge and attitude of intensivists toward organ donation in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Section snippets
Method
A questionnaire was distributed among the 22 intensivists working in the intensive care units (ICUs) of the main 4 hospitals in Riyadh in June 2002. The questions were aimed at 5 areas:(1) knowledge about the efficacy of transplantation as a solution to treat end-stage organ failure; (2) main causes of the organ shortage; (3) personal opinion on how to improve the donation rate; (4) role and its performance of Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation (SCOT); and (5) personal belief and attitude
Knowledge about transplantation
None of the intensivists thought transplantation was experimental. Eleven thought it was practical and successful, 7 believed transplantation had limited success, and 4 did not know. Eleven thought that posttransplantation patients will have a near normal life, 8 said they will survive but be handicapped, 2 thought the patients will stay in the hospital most of their life, and 1 did not know.
Knowledge about organ donation

Discussion
Although the majority of intensivists see transplantation as a well-established clinical service, only 50% appreciate the high success rates of modern organ transplantation. It is worth mentioning that 2 of the participating hospitals have active multi-organ transplantation programs. The above finding is discouraging. It probably indicates even more ignorance about transplantation in the smaller peripheral hospitals. Most of the intensivists look at organ donation as the main avenue for the

Assessment of Community Knowledge of and Attitude Toward Organ Donation in Saudi Arabia
2023, Transplantation ProceedingsCitation Excerpt :Although not necessarily the main factor affecting organ donation, however, there is concern regarding organ trading. Additionally, the effect that others have on an individual's decision making can be another factor toward not donating organs, as the study found that the opinions of relatives were important and primary factors affecting the decision [32]. Family factors may be the reason individuals with self-decision, especially those between the ages of 31 and 40 years, were more likely to have a positive attitude toward organ donation compared with others.
Willingness of Hemodialysis Patient's Family Members Toward Kidney Donation: A Cross-Sectional Study
2020, Transplantation ProceedingsCitation Excerpt :In a previous study published in the United Kingdom assessing the HD patient’s willingness to undergo a kidney transplantation, 60% of them considered their knowledge toward kidney transplantation as poor or very poor, with 39% having no source of information [29]. Another study conducted in Saudi Arabia showed that the lack of knowledge also was observed among intensivists, where only one-third of the participants knew the role of SCOT in organ donation [30]. This indicates that despite huge efforts of increasing awareness about the importance of kidney transplantation and the donation process, still we are not achieving a satisfactory rate.
